Hey everyone! I'm Johanna and my business is Tatlow Global Consulting. Current landing page here (www.tatlowglobal.com). I've been around the international development world since 2016, but oddly spent very little time as a full-time employee. Due to family stuff (pregnancy loss and a subsequent risky pregnancy that made traveling for work out of the question), I left my only "in-house" NGO job just shy of a year in. Since then, I've been consulting on and off, but mainly on since 2022 as a grant writer. It's picked up a bunch of steam, so this Spring will actually be super-duper busy working for fairly large budget NGOs. That would be some people's dream, but it's not mine. I'm really passionate about the smaller, local Global South nonprofits and social impact ventures. And they really struggle to get funding (or even recognition). They also notably struggle to pay consultants, so serving them hadn't seemed like a valid business idea. But this fall a conversation in response to a LinkedIn post led to the idea of building out a training course and peer coaching model... So, that's what I'm working toward at this point, with all the imposter syndrome stuff nipping at my heels. Like, why am I the one qualified to do this? I'm not someone with 20+ years of experience, and I'm not a Global South person. But it seems I'm one of the few people willing to jump in and try stuff and not write off whole continents of people as "not being interested in learning program planning or grant writing." (Something I was told by another professional in my space about African nonprofit leaders when I shared my idea. Insert face palms and shaking of head here.) So, I'm working through the new business idea for now, while keeping my current consulting balls in the air. Personal intro stuff: I live in Charlotte, NC, but I grew up in Diyarbakir and Izmir, Turkey. My husband grew up in (then) Swaziland (now called Eswatini) and South Africa. We think raising our 5-year-old boy in suburban America is the weirdest thing ever, but it's working well for us.
