Question: What Makes Work Meaningful

Thanks Susanne and Denali for your thoughtful replies. I think that you’re absolutely onto something, Denali, in that the garden work lets the analytic parts of my brain rest for a bit. I hadn’t considered that before. I’m also realizing how important it is for me to be able to see results. Now that I’m paying attention to that, I’m starting to notice it in a few different areas of my life. Your observation about taking responsibility resonates, too, Susanne. Both in terms of taking responsibility for the tree, and taking responsibility for the financial investment.

I only just moved here from Maine, Kylie, and have been amazed by the mild winter (so far). Though I’d definitely take snow over the windy-wet we’ve had for the past week or so.

Hi Anne. Which part of Maine are you in? I’ve just moved away from Portland, and spent some time up in Presque Isle. I could have happily stayed in Maine forever, but my British husband was ready to come home. (Also, your business sounds amazing!)

Thanks for starting this thread, Susanne. I’m curious too.

    UK, near Newcastle.

That was such a fun surprise!! Thank you. Definitely feeling inspired to identify a name now.

Thanks, Dave. That summary of what is included in the 34 report is helpful. I think that I’m going to mull over my 1-5 for a few days and then will probably get the report to see the rest. I am curious to see what strengths show up as 6-10.

For anyone else who hasn’t bought the 34 report and is interested in knowing what the other strengths are, I just found This 2-page summary of all of the strengths on the Gallup website.

My strengths made me chuckle. I enjoy taking these kinds of tests but tend to be a bit dubious of the results. This time around they were pretty spot on, though: Learner, Intellection, Input, Relator, Responsibility. I guess that’s why my current job in organizational learning and strategic planning generally feels like a pretty good fit.

Also spot on: none of my top 5 is in the “Influencing” category. Influencing is a total black box for me – I don’t even know what strengths live there.

I’m trying to decide whether it would be worth paying for the full report. I’d be curious to hear if others found it helpful.

Thanks for organizing, Veronica and Ama! I’ve put this on my calendar and will try my best to come. (I’m in the UK, so it will be 10pm here.)

I’m a recovering academic, too. Maybe I shouldn’t be surprised that there are so many of us? I’d love to join the happy hour!

    Hello.

I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect from this program, but after a couple of years in the Data Academy I had no doubt that Stephanie would create an incredible space for growth and learning. Reading through all of your introductions just now has left me really excited, and glad that I decided to take the leap and enroll.

Like Veronica and Megan, I’m in the very early days of starting my business. No name or website yet. My dream is actually to start a cottage industry yarn mill that specializes in yarns made from ethically sourced, breed-specific British wool (with aspirations of becoming a B Corp).

The other thing on my mind as of the past few weeks, though, is maybe needing to start consulting in my current field. My husband is British, and at the end of last year we moved from Maine to the north of England. I’m currently working remotely for my US employer – doing strategic planning and organizational learning in the international development space. It’s an ideal setup in a lot of ways, but may not be sustainable…

Really looking forward to getting to know all of you and following your journeys!
