Question: How to Shut Down a Service

Oh! One more thing that may not be an issue for you, but was difficult for me to accept. Depending on what state you’re in, your only options may be HMO plans. I live in TX and there aren’t any PPO plans on the Marketplace for residents. I’d been on a PPO plan for many years through various employers, so the idea of having to go through my primary care doctor for everything really annoyed me. This may not be an issue for you, but wanted to throw that out there.

I just navigated this a few weeks ago for me and my husband who is also self employed. You are correct that you qualify for the special enrollment period due to losing your employer provided health insurance. You have until 60 days after your last day of coverage to enroll in a Marketplace plan.

I think it’s something you can do on your own. Back in 2020, when I was laid off my job, I worked with a broker, but didn’t find that person particularly helpful. Choosing a plan is hard and I wanted to pull my hair out so many times. A few things helped me make sense of everything 1) if my current providers were members of the plan, 2) what was most important to me… a low deductible, a low premium, or something in between, 3) my current healthcare needs vs. my husband’s healthcare needs, 4) how much would have to be paid out of pocket before insurance kicked in.

We wound up choosing two different plans, primarily due to different healthcare needs. (I have a few chronic conditions that require regular appointments and monthly medications, while my husband is healthy as a horse and only goes to the doctor once a year.) The plan I chose is not the cheapest, but it’s not the most expensive. I chose it because it’s a large network in my state, so all of my current providers are in my network, and my office visit co-pays and medications are similar to what I was paying on my employer plan.

You can do this! You may need to engage in some self care once you’ve wrapped your head around everything, but it’s doable.

This response is super late and by now you may have already found a solution, but Dubsado does all of the things you mentioned. The only thing is doesn’t do expense tracking, at least from what I’ve seen.

Hi everyone! My name is Christian and I’m based in the Austin, TX area. My business is Eleven 11 Consulting, which I officially launched in 2017. However, it wasn’t until 2020 that I started to put more energy into it (learning that your full-time job is being eliminated in the midst of a pandemic will certainly light a fire under you!). For the past few years, I’ve juggled Eleven 11 along with a full-time role at a non-profit. But, (as of today!) am fully self-employed.

My professional background is in K-12 and nonprofits evaluation work.  More recently, I’ve expanded to working with higher education institutions. My current clients mainly come to via word of mouth because they need an evaluator. So, I kind of get in where I fit in. One of my goals for this year is to narrow down what I want to be known for and what I’m offering. I’d also like to expand my client base… most of my messaging is geared towards nonprofits and I know that my skillset would be useful in other sectors.
