Meghan, your post really resonated with me. I started my post-grad career in a university-based evaluation unit (yes, Stephanie, OOOF to the 50% overheads). The projects that I found most interesting and fulfilling were the ones I wasn’t supposed to pursue because they were under $50k. Now, after years of chasing professional fulfillment elsewhere, I am finally ready to break away from being someone else’s employee and chart my own course.
