Anne, I listen to their podcast and they offer a lot of good advice. If I were to buy an online course on youtube then I’d pick theirs.

So I’ve been thinking about this weekend.

These videos have helped me think through this challenge:

    1. Thinking about capacity: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=21QVXT5yMSg
    2. Workload management: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PTuFc9PSh

I use click-up to organize my work so I’m developing a system to manage my capacity. Wish me luck! I’ll be back with an overview. Basically, I need my tasks to have a start date, a due date, and an estimated time. Then I need to do some organizing across some lists.

I’m so sorry to hear about your negative experience.

The sorts of support you need probably depend on the experience itself (to some extent). I’m not sure if a business coach could handle something like you described. But I may be completely wrong. I think a therapist might help.

I have been doing EMDR therapy. From what I heard, it can be very good for PTSD. https://www.healthline.com/health/emdr-therapy#benefits

I don’t think it is for everyone. For example, if you’re very hesitant to try things that seem woo you probably won’t like it. But, if you’re open to things like meditation you’ll probably do well with it.

My therapist is only doing virtual therapy. Here is her contact info: isabelle@futsitherapy.com.

If your traumatizing experience was something somewhat business-related: being put down or not being paid. Then I think a business coach could help you address negative beliefs.

Regardless, I recommend getting some support to deal with the aftermath. However, don’t feel pressure to do work you’re not excited about. There are so many people in the world, let others do the things you’re not excited about. I’m sure your professors have your best interest at heart, but if you’re not called to do something don’t feel pressured to do it.

    I use to use https://toggl.com/.

I started using ClickUp (it’s like asana). I use the time tracker in there now.

    Thanks, everyone for sharing!

I recently had a budgeting conversation with another group.

One of the more senior people shared that she charges $150 = $50 for her+$50 for the business+$50 for reflection time. She also shared that a big-name evaluation person suggested she double it.

As for me, I charge between $80 to $110.

I have a long-time client who I haven’t raised my rates for since I started supporting their work. I will do that next time the contract comes around. I was very nervous about it, but seeing everyone’s rates makes me feel more comfortable.

When I take on new projects, I do the project-based rate. I calculate how long I think it will take me to complete a project / phase. Then I charge $110. Historically, I have underestimated my time. So, I don’t actually make the $110.

When I take on subcontracting agreements, I now charge $110. So that ends up being the best bang for my time. 🙂

Susanne, Thanks for the feedback. I’m worried that they will keep seeing me as a party of one and have expectations about that. I want to be able to hand things off and have some of the work less reliant on me.

    Hi Susanne,

I like your name idea. Have you heard of Design Justice: https://designjustice.org/. It’s a book and an active community of people who want to work with design in an equitable way.

Your name idea is pretty similar. I’m not sure how you’ll feel about that. Regardless, the book / community sounds right up your alley. 🙂

    Hi Denali,

Videos are a great marketing tool, but they do take a lot of time. The good thing about youtube is that your content gets to live on for a long time. Especially if it is searchable.

I recommend checking out some of these creators for tips / suggestions:

    1. https://www.youtube.com/c/SunnyLenarduzzi — I bought her program and can tell you more if you’re interested.
    2. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCdOPzgbosSnbfwd9-iXP2NA
    3. https://videocreators.com/podcast-archives/ — This is the program I would pay for if I had the time to double down on my youtube channel.

    General recommendations:

    1. Start with the tools you have. E.g., your phone’s camera.
    2. Think about the audience when you’re creating content. In the short term, you’ll want to get people the information they came to get. However, (based on what I am learning) long-term, you want people to want to learn from you specifically and that involves more storytelling / showing your personality.
    3. YouTube is owned by Google. It doubles as a search engine. You can use tools like keywords everywhere to get a better understanding of the sorts of words people look for.
    4. Lighting is good to have, but good audio is more important.

in reply to: Website hosting platform help? #1734

I have WIX and have had some issues. I would not recommend it. I would go with something you can grow with.

It’s simple to use and very flexible for beginners. Probably a good choice for a very simple website.

My site seems to have always been slow to load. I probably have too many graphics.

Now I have an actual problem that I can’t seem to be able to solve. I wanted to add a widget that would have a recent LinkedIn post on the sidebar (something dynamic). I didn’t like it and deleted it. Now, it’s stuck at the bottom of my website and I can’t take it off. I’ve and others looked at the code that they give you access to. The widget is not in the code.

I plan to switch to Squarespace or WordPress soon.
