Susanne, that drawing is hilarious. 🙂 I would be open to a themed exchange – – great idea!

This is a really good question. I recently overloaded myself because I did not want to turn down a new and interesting project. One idea I have had is to establish a solid referral network so that if you if have to pass on a project, you can at least redirect the potential client in a meaningful way and provide someone in. your network with an opportunity. Hopefully this would go both ways. I look forward to hearing what others have to say.

Thank you Michelle. I appreciate the suggestions. Wasn’t aware that EMDR could be done remotely, but why not? That might be worth a shot.

    Karen,

Where I live is definitely beautiful, I am not gonna lie. But living on a tiny volcanic island in the middle of the Atlantic has its challenges. Storms… landslides… weird expat dynamics… shrimp-like bugs that invade your home by the thousands and then die and smell like…you guessed it: dead shrimp!

What I would not give sometimes for a steaming plate of Thai food… or Mexican food… or any ethnic, spicy food, really… a concert, a play, or an art museum… my dear friends who live halfway across the world….

I am about to buy a guest “glamping tent” for my yard if anyone would like to visit. Don’t come in November bc that’s when the shrimp bugs are most active!

    😉

This is a great idea; I’m in. I also love the idea of the “look at my website” sub-committee.

Right now I have stepped away from empire building and am kind of in “phase 2” of my Portuguese farmhouse renovation. My plan is to be back at my desk at least half-time by May 1.

    Please hold me accountable!

    Hi Mapi,

What a joy to see your site! I agree with the others that you have done an amazing job with your branding. The colors, the fonts, images, and layout all convey a joyful sense of purpose and meaning. You have carved out a distinct niche by creatively branding yourself this way in a field that can sometimes feel cerebral and methodical. Brava!!

Questions: What platform was used to design this site? Did you hire a developer? If so, care to share contact info?

Others here have given you some excellent feedback on little language tweaks you might consider making. As an editor/writer I am trained to notice the annoyingly itty bitty details, and I would add that in the second image caption on the left side of the Home page, you might want to change “LET’S PUT IN WRITING” to “LET’S PUT IT IN WRITING”. 🙂

I also think it could be helpful to include some text links to improve the user experience and for SEO purposes:

    • Your name in the header could link to your LinkedIn profile or contact page
    • On the Services page, you could link to some examples of your work
    • On the About Me page, you could add links to some of the organizations and institutions you mention

Just followed you on instagram and sent you a LinkedIn request. I think we are cut from the same cloth.

Thanks again for sharing your site with us.

    in reply to: Pricing! #2159

    Hi Susanne,

Just wanted to say that I am also struggling with pricing. My prices as an independent consultant over the years have been all over the map, ranging from several stints of full-time pro bono organizational development work for grassroots organizations in Tanzania, $20/hr academic editing jobs, $70/hr international development consultancies for the EU, all the way to a high-flying strategic health policy consulting gig that paid $13,000 per week.

I was using some similar and some different skill sets in each of these consultancies, and I understand that I was operating in really different markets, but still… having such wildly different payment experiences has created a lot of confusion in my head about what I am actually “worth.” Another concern I have is that I don’t want to price myself so high that grassroots organizations can no longer afford my services. After living and working in sub-Saharan Africa for many years and seeing what people there are up against (many of these people have become dear, dear friends), I really struggle with economic disparities in different parts of the world and with my own privilege, which feels so yucky sometimes.

The word “greed” keeps popping into my head. I don’t want to go back to the corporate mindset I left behind in 2009, after that high-flying consultancy and several stints in the pharmaceutical/insurance world.  I also cannot afford to work for a pittance. I absolutely believe that it is possible to do great and meaningful work in the world and be well compensated, but something inside of me (guilt?) is blocking me from achieving this in my most recent professional incarnation. It looks like serendipity is on my side and Stephanie sent out some podcasts to listen to that address these issues. Hoping to dive into those later today.

Right now I don’t have answers but I am going to be following these discussions closely. Hoping others will weigh in. Thanks for starting this thread.

in reply to: Advice on making it through business bootcamp? #2100

Hi Veronica. I have spent some time in the higher echelons of the private sector, so I understand a little about those tribal dynamics, lol. My experience is that when people—including aspiring and established entrepreneurs and business executives—are confident and relaxed, they do not engage in the posturing you describe. That behavior most likely indicates that they feel vulnerable, too; thus, they overcompensate. If they already have the answers then why are they there? 😉

Stand tall and strong and know that you have as much right to be in that space as anyone else. Go get ’em.

    Zoe, you are most welcome!

Veronica, the design company you’ve chosen looks really solid. How did you find them? Good luck with your branding adventure!

Thank you Kylie and Susanne for sharing your thoughts. After giving all this a good think over the weekend, I am coming to the conclusion that I am not quite ready to settle on what my main offer is, for now. Per your suggestion, Susanne, I need to tinker a bit more. Kylie, thanks for bringing me back to the ladder concept. I need to think about how my related ideas might fit into that framework.

Decided that I am going to go through all the course materials once and cogitate some more before “actualizing” my business.
