Just a bit of a Pricing victory to post and inspire.
Had a call with a potential client to find out their needs (I build and teach others to build Power BI reports) a few weeks ago. We agreed there were 2 directions we could go with this project, so I sent them a quote for each direction, while they talked to other consultants.
I took Stephanie’s (and all of your) advice and thought about how much time it would take me with the info I had (although I quoted them per-project), and then increased the amount by a bunch…
And then I doubled the amount, because I knew there will be unforeseen difficulties, requiring more of my time…
Just heard back from them that they want to use my services at the prices quoted… so now we head to the contract stage of things.

Email addresses and google group #2715Hey all – my experience with WordPress in the past helped me find an rss feed for these forum pages, so you can subscribe to it (with a feedreader like feedly.com or inoreader.com or newsblur.com) and it’ll let you know when there’s a new post in the forum. 🙂

Summer
- slowly putting together a website (traversdata.com)
- professional photo (on website, but need some more professional casual ones..)
- email newsletter (first edition drops tomorrow – travers.substack.com)
- possible clients are all around. In exploratory and scope phases with several now.

Since my whole deal (thanks to Stephanie) is making Power BI dashboards that are useful and put users first, it’s called “People-Friendly Power BI” and is going to be casual, fun, and informative.
First edition goes out tomorrow.
Using “Substack” (but not making anyone pay) as it’s the most no-nonsense platform I can find. I used to use Mailchimp a lot years ago, but they’ve added sooo many features, it’s hard to figure out everything I need to do to send an email.
Give me easy. 🙂

Big congrats, Lauren!!
Website looks good!
Awesome! The lead is progressing. We’ll see what happens. 🙂
This is such a great discussion thread.
Just starting the side-preneur journey and have started connecting with former colleagues familiar with my work who have have told me they miss my data visualization gifts and that their new employers may have a need for me, so this discussion will come soon.
I like the project-based concept… estimate how long (in hours) a project will take, but quote them the overall price (not hourly). I read somewhere (it may have been something Stephanie wrote) about taking your income goal for the year (and make it big, as you may not be working constantly the whole year) and then figure out what hourly rate will give you that goal, based on 8 hour days, 5 day weeks, etc.
Quote the total for the project, with language like “With similar projects I’ve done for other clients, with your timeline deadline and the current scope, this work costs Y.”
(this is assuming you’ve had the budget / timeline discussion with them already. I’m going to throw in the scope thing because #scopecreep is everywhere )

Hey Dave! I’m in Toronto. 🙂
I’m in Toronto, Canada.
Wow! Look at all these cool introductions I have to catch up on!
I’m Joe. Big fan of Stephanie’s since I saw her present on dataviz at an Eval Conference in the olden days (2013). The Evergreen Academy has helped me make data visualization the only thing I do at my day job, and gotten me good raises.
I’m also an Evergreen Graph Guide and am the guy making the new Power BI tutorials in the Academy.
Looking to branch out into helping organizations make their data visualizations and dashboards better so their people can use them to diversify income, start as a side-preneur but happy to have that side become more and more “main”.
