Question: Hate the Idea of Marketing?

Asked by:

About the „professional“ photo: did you mean professional in the sense of being taken by a professional photographer or professional in the sense of you looking professional on the photo? Because I would not care about the latter at all, this is not a photo for an job application. I would really care much more about authenticity and the right vibe, as you put it.
Why not take an unprofessional photo for now until you get to the shooting? Depends on when you have time to do it, but I would be more forgiving about a photo that does not have the perfect lightning than a photo that has the wrong vibe.

for example your photo here is maybe not perfect, but certainly a better fit, I would think.

You are welcome, I am glad it was helpful.

Still thinking about the photo: what would match the photo of the stones would be a shooting at a beach or on a wooden jetty at a lake during the golden hour. Both the wooden jetty and the beach have Something to them that is about freedom, leaving things behind, a fresh start …

Every paragraph is from a separate person and you grouped it by pricing model?

Oh wow Karen thank you for collecting that and posting it here! I also do hope that this a save place to share this kind of information, since this is not public, I hope no one gets into trouble.

one question: I got a bit confused where the contribution of one person ended and the next one started?

    Hi Dyrk,

here is my impression (totally subjective, totally honest):

The photograph with the stones and warm sunlight gives a sense of relaxation, a safe place, calm, warm.
For me the photo of you does not match that (sorry, I tried to rephrase and find a nicer way to say this, did not succeed). With the guy on the photo I would not want to discuss my emotions. Maybe I would buy an insurance police from him or discuss my financial matters. For me it looks to formal. The way you are dressed and the missing scenery in the background. To me it would be much more appealing if you showed some of your personality with that photo. But maybe it should not be appealing to me?

which brings me to the next point: who will be your clients?

you mention in the FAQs that a lot of your colleagues specialise on a certain clientele, which one is yours?

Aesthetically, I like the warm sand tone of the menu. About the way photos and text are distributed, mmmh, not sure about that. It seems to be imbalanced at times, for example your photo is at the left with no margin, the stone photo has a margin to the right.

content wise: yes, it makes sense to me what you do.

I hope it is helpful and not discouraging, I know that is hard work to make things look good (not there yet myself).

I raised my workshop rate, wrote it down and said it out loud to a potential new client. In a steady way with a firm voice.

I‘ll have a little dance here that I did it while anxiously waiting for their reply.

Hi Dave, thanks for posting your experience here.

About the workshops I was thinking about doing something like meeting them in the middle: there is a minimum number of people they need to pay for (if they are there or not) and then there is a per person fee on top of that.

Because that would be value based pricing looking from their end. They get more value if they can get 15 people trained instead of 10.

I found doing fixed prices for projects hard sometimes, because you really have to fight to not have to do extra work. Although I did communicate that there are two rounds of revisions included and that if they accept Step 1 we will move on to Step 2, I had a lot of discussion going on, because they later wanted to go back to Step 1 and have changes implemented. Then you need a strategy to deal with that. What are the extra costs? Do you say that there is an hourly rate for any extra changes?

I don’t really have a good solution to this, just saying that in my experience it can be more of a challenge with fixed prices to not go beyond the scope and still have a happy client in the end.

    Hi Jennifer,

yep, I definitely need to listen to those podcasts as well … but one thing that Stephanie said makes a lot of sense to me: You do not need to see the money that you are making as being just your money you are piling up like Donald Duck.

Instead of getting a golden bathtub for yourself you can also choose to give money back to other, like to charity or other organisations that can make a change.

    Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

I would be interested in your experience with regards to pricing.

Do you know where you stand compared to your competitors? Does anyone here sell the 10 dollar cupcake?

Did you raise your rates? How was this received by your clients?

Do you offer different prices for different groups (academia / industry)?

How transparent is your pricing, do you have it on the website?

These are just some of the questions that came to my mind, please feel free to share any other stories / experiences as well.

in reply to: Website and elevator speech feedback :) #2138

    Hi Mapi,

oh wow, what a great website! The colors and fonts totally bring across the joy without being too playful. Amazing branding.

I agree with the others, that the elevator speach feels less joyful, it is somewhat formal. Especially the first sentence. It does not have something to it that is special for you, it feels like a generic intro sentence. Is it needed? About the second sentence: For me it feels much stronger to start with the result, i.e. “I help non-profits enhancing their impact in their communities, …” I also like Kylie’s idea starting with the “I run a business called the Joy of Impact”. It is such a a great name, it is a great starting point! Much better than “I am a xxx consultant.”

Amazing how hard it can be to say precisely in a non-boring way what we are doing, isn’t it?. I am still at the level of “totally confusing, long and not interesting” :-/

Yes! I would love to attend – it depends on the time of the day, if we have it anywhere between morning and early afternoon for your time zone, I am not asleep yet 🙂
